Having problem with 1985 chev 3/4 ton. The heat gage reads hot immediately. The battery gage shows overcharge. Could this be a faulty voltage regulator?

Hi there and welcome to JA

The alternator is it grounded properly, if so the regulator is not controlling the alternator output, for the temperature gauge try disconnecting the temperature switch or the coolant temperature sensor and see what happens.
