89 chevy van, belt broke, how to I get the tensioner to loosen? Or put on new belt?

Okay you mean simplu put teh belt on and then in teh process do what you are saying?

ok. after routing your belt in the engine as show in the picture. thye belt tensior is pring loaded, to finish installing the belt, you will need to use wrench to pull tensior up against its spring tension. then just simply install the belt on the last pulley. and just release to tensior. it is self adjusting. no need to loosen any bolts.

  1. Using a 1/2 inch breaker bar with a socket placed on tensioner pulley axis bolt, rotate tensioner counter-clockwise.
  2. Remove belt from pulleys.
  3. Route new belt as shown
  4. Using breaker bar and socket, rotate tensional pulley axis bolt counter-clockwise and slip belt over tensioner, then release tensioner. Tensioner is spring loaded and will return to its original position when released.
