I have a Chevy Scottsdale 1987 4x4 3/4 ton. going down highway at speed it just died on me. After i had it towed home i got it started but it ran really rough. I have changed ingnition module, distributor caps, plugs, wires and reset timing but to no avail. The exhaust smells like all the fuel hasn't burnt completely. By the way the truck has an ECM but no coil in cap dist. Any help would be GREAT! Thanks, Jason

Reply to frank's Post: Only checked timing when dist. removed. Set at 4 deg. BTDC. Ran good. Emission label says 0 deg. It did run better w/ timing connector disconneted. Haven't checked EGR, compression test or fuel pressure test. No codes present. Also trk has 250000k miles I believe. Teach me how to check EGR and fuel pressure. I'm a shade tree mech. ( Someone had previously told me that the cam lobes could be worn flat on a couple of cyls. Someone else told me it could be cam and crank timing gear and it jumped time.) I just dont know any more. This truck is my baby and I want to get it going again. Was a really strong motor. Any help Thanks.

The egv valve needs to be fully closed at idle or it won't -it will be ok going down the road with maybe a surge,A worn cam lobe would have a pop corn sound on accel thru the air filter and may be a pop out the exhaust. You need to get a fuel pressure gauge and adapter to remove the filter and check there.spec is 10-13psi. Look at the injector spray pattern, they should both look the same-use a timing light to stobe it.The timing should be retarted with the set timing connector disconnected and run in base timing. You didn't check the timing before you moved the distributor ,it would have told you if it jumped a tooth-which is very possible,The distributors like to develpe problems that even engineering can't explain-if you have access to another one drop it in.Stll need to know codes if any-clear them first and then let them reset so we get only the current ones.A word of caution-that year like to crack blocks at the lifter valley because of the metal they removed to make room for the roller lifters in the cars.
